Dr. Lerner completed his graduate training at the SUNY Albany Center for Stress & Anxiety Disorders, and the Boston University Center for Anxiety & Related Disorders where he was involved in the research and treatment of panic disorder, agoraphobia, and specific phobia using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). After his graduate training, Dr. Lerner completed a post-Doctoral fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Following his fellowship, Dr. Lerner became a staff psychologist at MGH and an instructor at Harvard Medical School, where he has been for the past 10 years. In his work at MGH, Dr. Lerner supervises interns and residents in CBT and behavioral medicine, consults with the gastroenterology (GI) service where he directs the GI rotation of the behavioral medicine internship track, and has been involved in research looking at the Relaxation Response and Mindfulness at the Benson Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine. Dr. Lerner specializes in providing evidence-based CBT for patients with panic disorder, agoraphobia, and specific phobias. Dr. Lerner also offers clinical hypnosis for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Clinical hypnosis for IBS has been shown in numerous studies to lead to clinically significant improvements in IBS symptoms as well as quality of life.
